The idea that quality is more intrinsic to things than we usually admit was put
into my head way back when by the well-known philosophical bestseller Zen and
the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance. The author, Robert Pirsig, had a lot to
say about Quality (which he capitalized).
"Quality," wrote Pirsig (among
many other things!) "is a direct experience independent of and prior to intellectual
abstractions." He took care to note that Quality is something real in the
world--it's not merely a surface attribute, it's not simply "style."
I agree with that, and I think, if you're quiet, and present, you can listen to
music and tell whether it has quality, or even Quality.
