FINGERTIPS PODCASTS
basic information

Introduced in September 2006, Fingertips Podcasts began as aural versions of "This Week's Finds," but more conversational (no reading from the page), with one bonus song per podcast, one podcast per week (more or less). For a while the podcasts changed to feature two sets of three songs, with less talking. After a hiatus in the summer of 2007, the podcast has returned in its original form, minus the bonus song. They may or may not appear weekly. This is still a work in progress; the format may continue to evolve. Podcasts currently aim to be around 25 minutes long.

Before you can listen, you have to know if you want the MP3 version or the M4A version. (Technologically, these are different types of electronic files; the content, from a listener's perspective, is exactly the same.) If you have iTunes (either on a Windows computer or a Mac) you can use the M4A version; if you have Windows Media Player, or any other media player besides iTunes, you'll have to use the MP3 version. Note that the MP3 files are substantially larger than the M4A files.

Okay, once you have that straight, there are four ways to listen--two are good for the M4A version, one for the MP3, and one will work for both:

1) You can download each podcast directly, by clicking below on the word "download" next to the show you want to hear (you know the drill: right click, "save target as" or "save link as," etc). This one works for both--it's up to you to choose either the M4A or the MP3 version.

2) If you have iTunes (and therefore can listen to the M4A version), you can subscribe to the podcast by clicking here (which will take you to the FeedBurner page, which presents a relatively simplified interface from which to subscribe).

3) If you have iTunes, you can also subscribe by visiting the Fingertips podcast page on iTunes (if you don't have iTunes opened when you click, iTunes will open itself for you; how nice). This obviously is also only for the M4A version.

4) There is also a subscription available for non-iTunes users; click here to go to the FeedBurner page for the MP3 version of the podcast and subscription instructions should be self-explanatory.

Additional information

* As of week two, thanks to "popular demand," there have been both .m4a and .mp3 versions of the podcast. The .mp3 version takes up a lot more space on my server, however, so these will not remain online for as long as the .m4a files. I'm planning to leave only a few months' worth of .mp3 podcasts online at a time. The .m4as will remain online for maybe a year or so, give or take a couple of months.

* This is all a seat-of-the-pants learning experience. Bear with my errors, missteps, mispronunciations, and misunderstanding of technology.

Thanks for your interest, and your patience. If you have any questions or suggestions, or would like to hear a podcast that has been pulled offline, drop a line.
