Fingertips only deals with legally available music.

I do not spend time searching through illegal music files. Likewise I have no interest in the technologies that continue to spring up, like insecticide-proof cockroaches, that allow people to download and burn songs that the musicians themselves did not upload with the intention of free distribution. It's not that I care about record company cash flow, but I do care about musicians. My bottom line is this: I don't believe in taking music from musicians who do not intend for me to have it without paying them. Period.

As such, let me also make it clear that I see Fingertips as a sort of enhanced buyers' guide as much as anything else. I don't view the free songs that are available on the web as a replacement for buying CDs--I see them, instead, as a wonderful new source of discovery. It's like the radio used to be but mostly isn't anymore.

But it's also better than the radio because the web allows you not only to hear entire songs but to make quality recordings of them if you desire. You don't, then, have to wait for someone else to play the song for you. If I hear it a lot and like it, I'm always motivated to go and buy the entire CD. Just the way it used to be with the radio.
