Besides my focus on free and legal music only, this is another way that Fingertips is different than most music sites on the web: I do not cater to an in-crowd of music hipsters (not that I have anything against music hipsters, mind you!).
Almost all of the thoughtful music sites that I've come across on the web are heavily slanted towards fans who are way into the so-called "indie" music scene (and/or way into web technology), and are therefore full of jargon and references that may be meaningful to some but are meaningless to many, many others. Some of these sites add to the muddle by being confusingly designed--full of unexplained lists, mysterious symbols, and lots and lots of small type.
Both of these problems send a clear message to visitors: if you don't already know what we're talking about, don't bother trying to figure it out.
Me, I feel that some of the music "hiding" in the world of independent labels and musicians is so good and so truly accessible to a wider audience--to anyone with an open mind and open ears--that it seems a shame to be so often dealt with in so insular a manner.
It is a goal of mine, therefore, to bring otherwise unknown music to the attention of music lovers of all ages, backgrounds, shapes, and sizes. I don't think you should need to know special lingo to enjoy music. Neither should you need to know facts about the personnel of obscure bands, nor made to feel left out or ridiculed for not knowing stuff like that.
