UPLOAD FREE-FOR-ALLS

Okay, don't say I didn't warn you, but if you're really curious to see what an MP3 Hub looks and sounds like when it's simply an upload free-for-all, go ahead and try one of these sites. I'm listing them when I come across them largely as a warning. I'm sure there is the occasional good song buried in among any given free-for-all site, but trying to find it is not necessary a good use of time. I've said it before and I'll say it again: mediation is really really a good thing. Sites that are completely unmediated, that allow anyone who can record a song to upload it, are sometimes pretty scary.

I should note that many if not most upload free-for-alls do their best not to look like what they are. Some are reasonably attractive looking and feature "Editor's Picks" (or something like that) which imply that someone somewhere is making some aesthetic judgments; GarageBand.com, for instance, is as well-organized and thoughtfully produced as just about any music site on the web. But the bottom line is, if a site lets anyone at all upload their songs, then it is an upload free-for-all and a drastically unreliable source of high-quality music.
