Welcome to the Fingertips Contests page. Here's the place to look for stuff that you can win with very little effort and no contribution necessary. Of course you'll need a bit of luck. But don't we all.

If on the other hand you want a gift without requiring any luck at all, you're always free to visit the Prize Closet for an ongoing list of CDs that are available as gifts for donations of $10/year and above.

Win Hadestown,
the new album from
Anaïs Mitchell (and friends)

Hadestown is a tour de force, and all the more so for being quite so unexpected. I mean, I liked Anaïs Mitchell's work previously, but I certainly didn't see this one coming.

Hadestown is a full-fledged "folk opera," which originally came to life on stage in 2007. The story is based on the Orpheus myth, updated and tweaked to seem just right here in 21st-century, Great Recessionary America. Mitchell sings the part of Eurydice, and she's recruited some mighty interesting friends to fill out the cast for this special recording, including Justin Vernon (Bon Iver) as Orpheus, Greg Brown as Hades, and Ani DiFranco as Persephone. The music is as bleak and friendly and beautiful and creaky as Randy Newman doing his Tom Waits impression at a Kurt Weill convention.

Even the CD package--dark and woodcutty--is rather smashing. Kudos to Righteous Babe Records for supporting Mitchell so splendidly.

I encourage you to read Mitchell's own account of the history of Hadestown, and also encourage you to listen to "Flowers (Eurydice's Song)" available as a free and legal MP3 (and featured on "This Week's Finds" in February). A second free and legal MP3, for the song "Wait For Me," is also available.

If you like what you hear, be sure to enter the contest by sending an email according to the directions to the right, and then crossing your fingers.

Thanks to Righteous Babe Records and Toolshed for the goods.

How to enter the contest

If you would like to be eligible to win a copy of Hadestown, send an email to fingertipsmusic at gmail (and don't forget the dot com) with "Hadestown" in the subject line. In the body of the email, this time, please write:

1) your favorite Broadway musical or opera (just curious); and
2) your first name and last name, because, as usual, if you're going to win, I'm going to need to know. Anonymous people can't win anything.

Please use an email address that you check regularly so if you win, you'll be able to find out. I will always confirm your entry into the contest, so if you don't get a confirmation within two days, please check your spam folder. If my emails end up in your spam folder, you'll never find out when you win. (Trust me, it's happened more than once.)

There will be three winners this time, selected at random from eligible entries.

The deadline for entry is Friday March 26. The drawing will take place shortly thereafter; only the winners will be notified; yada yada yada.

Keep your eye on this page for future contests, which will randomly occur when you least expect it

And, of course, if you don't end up winning, there is a page of many other prizes available (for a donation to the site) on the regular Prize Closet page. Feel free to browse there; donations are always welcome, and deeply appreciated.
