This is unlikely (I think) to be the attitude of the artist; it is not unlikely, however, that this will be the attitude of a certain portion of the super-fans who attach themselves to the artist. I've already talked about how casual fans are unlikely to feel any connection to artists who are busy catering to their "True Fans." This will not just be because casual fans aren't interested in buying what the super-fans want to buy. It may also be because the cliquey, insider atmosphere created by an accumulation of super-fans is an inherent turnoff for casual fans. Some will avoid it because they feel left out; some because they've grown up and know better than to stay in middle school their entire adult lives. [return to main essay] |
